District of Columbia Bonus Tax Calculator 2026

DC's tax office says it cannot produce withholding tables after the 2017 federal changes, so this page estimates the bonus's DC tax from the DC rate schedule — 4% to 10.75% — and labels it an estimate.

Why this page shows an estimate

The District's Office of Tax and Revenue no longer publishes withholding tables. Its most recent guidance on the subject, OTR Tax Notice 2022-08, explains that the 2017 federal changes to exemptions and deductions "impacted the District's ability to produce withholding tables" and tells employers to use the District's current rate schedule together with the federal allowance amount. OTR's withholding-instructions page now returns an error; we read its last archived version, which links only to that notice.

Payroll systems have filled the gap in different ways, so there is no single official DC bonus figure to verify. Rather than borrow a vendor's number, this calculator estimates the DC tax the bonus adds: it applies the DC rate schedule (4% up to $10,000, then 6%, 6.5%, 8.5%, 9.25%, 9.75% and 10.75% over $1 million) to your annualized pay less the 2026 federal standard deduction, with and without the bonus. For the standard example that is $425.00; at a $9,000 biweekly salary, $425.00. If your employer uses a different figure, enter it as a percentage and the calculator will use it instead.

Who owes DC tax on a bonus

DC income tax applies to people domiciled in the District or keeping a home there 183 days or more. Commuters who live in Maryland or Virginia are taxed by their home state on wages earned in DC, so they should choose that state above rather than the District.
