Your calculator inputs stay in your browser

The bonus amount, salary, filing status, county and every other figure you type are processed by JavaScript on your own device. They are never sent to our server. When you use "Share result," the inputs are written into the part of the link after the # sign (the URL fragment), which browsers do not transmit to web servers, so even a shared link does not put your numbers in any log.

What we record

We run our own first-party measurement — no Google Analytics, no advertising pixels, no third-party scripts of any kind. When a page loads or the calculator is used, the page sends a small event to our server containing:

  • the event name (for example "pageview", "calc_interact", "calc_complete", "share");
  • the page path (never the query string or fragment) and, for calculator events, the two-letter state code;
  • a random identifier created for that single page load and not stored on your device;
  • the referring website's host name only, your country (from our hosting provider's network header), and whether the screen is mobile or desktop sized.

We do not store your IP address, your browser's user-agent string, cookies or any persistent identifier. Automated clients (bots) are filtered out using the user-agent at the moment of the request, and the user-agent is then discarded rather than saved.

Correction reports

If you send a correction through the contact form, we store the category you chose, your message, the page it concerns and — only if you provide it — a reply address. We use these only to investigate and answer the report. Like events, reports are stored without your IP address or user-agent.

Storage and retention

Events and reports are kept in a database hosted by Cloudflare, our hosting provider. Aggregated event counts are used to find calculator problems (for example, a state where people start but rarely finish). Correction reports are kept until resolved and then archived. Nothing is sold or shared with anyone for marketing.

Your choices

Because nothing identifies you, there is no account or profile to delete. You can block the measurement request with any content blocker; the calculator works the same either way. Questions about this page can be sent through the contact form.
