6.25% regardless of allowances

The Department of Revenue's 2026 Minnesota Withholding Tax Instructions and Tables treat overtime, commissions, bonuses and other supplemental payments together. When they are paid separately from regular wages, they "are subject to the 6.25% Minnesota withholding rate regardless of how many allowances employees claim." A $5,000 bonus carries $312.50; a $3,000 bonus, $187.50.

Paid in the same check

If the bonus and regular wages are in one payment, the method depends on the payroll records. Listed separately, the employer may add them and use the tables (Method 1) or take tables on the regular wages and 6.25% on the bonus (Method 2). Not listed separately, Method 1 is required — the bonus is withheld at whatever rate the combined paycheck reaches in the tables.

Checking your employer's math

The Department's online withholding tax calculator covers regular wages, supplemental payments (overtime, commissions and bonuses), payments for personal services and payments through the end of the current year — a quick way to confirm the 6.25% on your stub.

Overtime and commissions too

The 6.25% rule sits under the heading "Overtime, Commissions, Bonuses, and Other Supplemental Payments," so a $2,000 commission check paid on its own is withheld $125.00 for Minnesota, the same rate as a bonus. Overtime included in a regular paycheck is a different case and goes through the tables with the rest of the pay.
