A revenue department without an income tax

The Wyoming Department of Revenue is organized into excise, mineral and property tax divisions; there is no individual income tax and no wage withholding certificate. A bonus paid for work in Wyoming loses federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare only: $3,517.50 from $5,000, $21,105.00 from a $30,000 bonus.

Rotations and job sites in other states

Pay for work performed in a neighboring state can be taxed there even for a Wyoming resident. On the same $5,000 bonus, Montana's flat 5% option takes $250.00, Colorado's DR 1098 formula $220.00 and Utah's June 2026 schedule $222.50.

What changes the Wyoming check

Only federal choices move the number. The $5,000 bonus nets $3,451.19 if payroll aggregates it with a $3,000 biweekly paycheck instead of using the flat 22%. For a high earner late in the year, Social Security stops at the $184,500 wage base: with $170,000 already earned, a $30,000 bonus nets $22,066.00 because only $14,500 of it owes the 6.2%.

Deferring part of it

With no state income tax to reduce, a 401(k) deferral only lowers federal income tax withholding; Social Security and Medicare are still owed on the deferred dollars. Sending 10% of the $5,000 bonus to the plan cuts federal withholding by $110 and leaves a check of $3,127.50 plus $500 in the account. The 2026 employee deferral limit is $24,500.
